As she sorted through the contents of her mother's apartment after her death, my sister-in-law found collections of matchbooks, stored exclusively in pottery that she had made in college. On the night she left the apartment for the last time, she came to my studio and removed the matches from each matchbook and match box into one of the pots. These were set on fire.
The installation consists of:
Two 1-hour videos play simultaneously; the first of Sara removing the matches, the second of them burning.
The pottery holding the burned matches.
The empty matchbooks and boxes.
The installation may be accompanied by photographs documenting the event, the fire, and the burned matches.
